Utti

The 'Utti', akin to the South American Pinata, is a social game where players compete to strike down a coveted prize just out of their reach. Originating from South India, particularly from the state of Telangana, Utti is traditionally associated with the 'privileged' masculine gender in Indian society, with men assumed to possess the strength and skill necessary for success - a stereotype perpetuated by societal expectations.

To me, 'Utti' represents an ancient, yet often overlooked, aspect of social dynamics - where collective guard is lowered, and vulnerability to belief and its reinforcement is heightened. Such games, deeply ingrained in religious and cultural practices, reinforce gendered power dynamics and societal hierarchies based on caste, class, and birth status.

In my performance project entitled 'Utti', I aim to deconstruct and interrogate these entrenched norms. By appropriating this traditional Indian game, I seek to explore the metaphysical and subliminal aspects of the societies I inhabit, reflecting on my own personal journey within these complex structures. Through this exploration, I aim to highlight the intersections of my identity, including my religious background, position within various social spectrums, and experiences with gender, caste, and intelligence.

Through this artistic endeavor, I hope to provoke thought and conversation about the intricate layers of privilege and power that shape our daily lives, while also offering a deeply personal and introspective reflection on identity and belonging.
